Pig Pen and Slaughter House

 <  PREVIOUS   NEXT >

As we walk up past the chicken house along the side of the fishpond we come to the room where the chickens are prepared for the shop. The older children help with plucking the birds (to earn a little money) and this allows us to prepare them quickly for transportation in ice boxes by river to the shop where they are frozen. This room is also used for making specialty meats (smoked and marinated), spicy sausages and paté of pork and chicken. Alongside this room we can see the first of the pigpens holding some of the young pigs being fattened up for killing. There are 15-20 breeding sows on the farm and around 100-120 pigs in total of various ages.
